The Kano State Government has received a major food donation from the Federal Government to support more than 300 repatriated and Almajiri children currently camped at the Hajj Camp and other locations across the state.
The food items were handed over on Tuesday by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation through the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI).
Kano State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Alhaji Adamu Kibiya, expressed appreciation for the gesture, stating that it will significantly improve the lives of the state’s most vulnerable children.
“We are grateful for this timely support aimed at improving the lives of these children and strengthening security in our state,” said Kibiya.
The donated items include: 70 bags of 50kg rice, 64 bags of 100kg millet, 50 bags of 100kg guinea corn, 200 bags of salt, 2,047 cartons of noodles, 120 cartons of seasoning, 120 jerricans of groundnut oil, 97 cartons of dates, 70 bags of semolina, 100 25-litre containers of palm oil, and 129 bags of 100kg beans.
Kibiya noted that the children at the camp include those displaced from crisis-affected areas in neighboring states as well as Almajiri children undergoing training and orientation.
“Thousands of children still sleep under bridges and in markets. This is why we sought the support of the Federal Government and well-meaning Nigerians to protect them and ensure their future,” he said.
He also thanked President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, and Governor Abba Yusuf for their continued commitment to the welfare of vulnerable populations.
He pledged that the items would be distributed transparently and fairly to the intended beneficiaries.
NCFRMI State Coordinator, Hajiya Lubah Liman, echoed the Federal Government’s dedication to assisting those in need, urging the state government to ensure equitable distribution of the supplies.
