FG Empowers Poultry, Cassava Farmers in Edo

In a significant move to bolster agriculture in Edo State, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security on Monday empowered 200 poultry farmers with day-old chicks and 500 cassava farmers with cassava cuttings.

Speaking at the event in Benin, Dr. Samuel Owoicho, Edo Coordinator for the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, emphasized that this initiative is a key step in enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in the state.

“We are here to celebrate a milestone in our collective efforts, empowered by President Bola Tinubu. This initiative is made possible through the Federal Department of Agricultural Extension Services, in collaboration with SANCT International Nigeria Limited,” Owoicho stated.

The initiative aligns with the ministry’s mission to promote sustainable agricultural development, strengthen food security, and improve the economic well-being of smallholder farmers. It aims to enhance farmers’ knowledge and skills in modern farming practices, ultimately leading to increased productivity, higher incomes, and greater economic empowerment.

Owoicho urged farmers to fully engage in the training provided, adopt new technologies, and apply the knowledge gained to maximize benefits.

He also encouraged them to share knowledge with fellow farmers, join cooperatives, and leverage government support services to transform agriculture in Edo State.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Martha Mogudadu, a poultry farmer from Oredo Local Government Area, expressed gratitude for the support. “I received 25 chicks, two 50kg bags of poultry feed, and multivitamins. The promise of additional cash support will greatly assist in raising the birds. With the rising costs of poultry feeds and chicks, this gesture is truly commendable and will significantly boost our small farming businesses,” she said.

Similarly, Mr. Autthur Aiya, a cassava farmer from Orhionmwon Local Government Area, praised the initiative, noting that it would encourage more people to take up farming.

“Providing free inputs and training will inspire more people to engage in farming, even on a small scale. I thank the Federal Government for this initiative and urge them to continue supporting farmers,” Aiya remarked.

This initiative is seen as a vital step towards achieving sustainable agricultural practices, strengthening the agricultural value chain, ensuring food security, reducing poverty, and fostering economic growth in Edo State
