FG Launches 750,000-Hectare Cultivation Project Under NAGS-AP

The Federal Government has unveiled an ambitious plan to cultivate 750,000 hectares of land for maize, wheat, rice, and cassava production through its National Agricultural Growth Scheme Agro-pocket project.

This initiative, announced by the Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Aliyu Abdullahi, at the 2024 Sahel Food Systems Change Makers Conference in Abuja, aims to tackle food inflation by significantly boosting domestic food production.

Themed “Innovative Governance Models: A Pathway for Food and Nutrition Security in Nigeria,” the event focused on modernizing Nigeria’s agricultural sector to ensure long-term food stability.

Abdullahi outlined the government’s shift towards all-year-round farming, enhancing productivity through both rainy and dry seasons. “Abundant food brings down prices,” he said, explaining that this continuous production approach addresses the high cost of food in the country.

He further detailed plans to maximize Nigeria’s irrigation potential, with river basins such as the Niger and Benue identified as resources to support this expansion.

In line with this, the government is exploring triple-cropping seasons by integrating advanced seed varieties and climate-smart technologies. These short-duration, drought-resistant, and disease-tolerant crops are expected to increase resilience against environmental challenges and boost yields.

The Minister stressed that this approach represents a transformative shift for Nigerian agriculture.

“We must move away from traditional methods to a more structured system that can respond to our growing food needs,” Abdullahi said.

The Federal Government’s push for innovation also extends to state governments, with a call for governors to prioritize food security measures locally to support national objectives.
