The Lagos State Government has commenced a targeted empowerment programme for retired public servants, training no fewer than 80 beneficiaries in biogas production, poultry, and rabbit farming to strengthen their economic independence after service.

The two-day training, organised by the Office of the Head of Service, is being held at the Alausa Secretariat in Lagos, with a focus on equipping retirees with practical, income-generating skills.

Speaking at the opening session, the Permanent Secretary, Public Service, Office of the Head of Service, Sunkanmi Oyegbola, described the initiative as a strategic effort to enhance the standard of living of retired officers while promoting sustainable livelihoods.

Represented by the Deputy Director of the Post Service Department, Bisi Rowland, Oyegbola said the programme forms part of the state’s broader social support framework for senior citizens.

She noted that the training is designed to provide retirees with entrepreneurial competencies that will enable them to remain productive and self-reliant, even after years of meritorious service.

Oyegbola emphasised that retirees deserve continued institutional support, adding that the government remains committed to ensuring a dignified and comfortable life for its former workforce.

She particularly highlighted the importance of biogas production, noting its dual benefits in waste management and alternative energy generation, while also presenting viable business opportunities.

A beneficiary and retired teacher from the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, Irene Enogwe, commended the initiative, stating that it has exposed participants to new and profitable ventures.

According to her, the training has broadened their perspective on agribusiness, especially in areas such as biogas and animal farming, which she described as both innovative and financially rewarding.

Other participants also praised the Lagos State Government for prioritising the welfare of retirees through impactful programmes, noting that such interventions would improve their quality of life and encourage active, productive ageing.
