The Federal Government, in partnership with the Borno State Government, has inaugurated a livestock improvement and ranch settlement initiative in Ngarannam, Mafa Local Government Area.

Speaking at the commissioning on Saturday, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, disclosed that 640 beneficiaries have been selected for the project. Each recipient will receive livestock, including cows and goats, along with essential food items such as 25kg bags of rice, beans, and maize grits.

Beneficiaries will also be provided with household essentials, including mats, wrappers, blankets, buckets, and shelter, as part of efforts to rebuild lives and foster self-reliance.

The Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar, described the project as a strategic step toward diversifying the economy beyond oil through livestock development.

He highlighted its potential to generate employment, reduce poverty, and stimulate economic growth.

Mukhtar also emphasized plans to engage more women in livestock activities, standardize industry practices, and curb the spread of animal diseases like Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia and foot-and-mouth disease.

Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur commended the federal government’s initiative, noting that improving the livestock sector is key to addressing food security challenges.

He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting internally displaced persons (IDPs) and enhancing agricultural development.

President of Miyetti Allah, Alhaji Baba Usman, urged members to embrace the RUGA programme, which aims to resolve conflicts between farmers and herders and promote peaceful coexistence.

In his remarks, Professor Attahiru Jega stressed the importance of commercial agriculture in addressing national food security concerns, especially given Nigeria’s large population.

He revealed that over $2 billion in foreign investment has been attracted to the livestock sector, notably from Saudi Arabia. Jega called for sustained collaboration between stakeholders and the government to ensure long-term success.

Dr Markus Ogwuboye, Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for facilitating the project.

He emphasized the importance of proper facility management by the beneficiaries to ensure sustainable outcomes.
