In a bid to alleviate the economic challenges faced by vulnerable Nigerians, the Federal Government has launched a food distribution program in Sokoto State.
The initiative, however, aims to provide essential sustenance to those affected by the prevailing economic downturn.
Led by Sen. Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, the distribution commenced with the allocation of 26,404 bags of maize, millet, and sorghum.
Sen. Kyari emphasized that the gesture is part of President Bola Tunibu’s commitment to mitigating the impact of the current economic hardships experienced nationwide.
Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State applauded the Federal Government for choosing Sokoto to kick-start the distribution.
He, however, assured citizens that the distribution process would be transparent and fair, urging committee members to ensure judicious allocation of the food items.
According to Mrs. Zubaida Umar, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sokoto is set to receive 10,120 bags of maize, 11,960 bags of sorghum, and 4,324 bags of millet.
She outlined the guidelines for distribution, which include allocating a portion of the food items to religious organizations and boarding schools in the local government areas.
The distribution committees, comprising representatives from various agencies and organizations, have been established in each local government area to oversee the distribution process.
Notable attendees at the inauguration ceremony included Sen. Aliyu Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, and Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC Sokoto).
However, as the distribution program unfolds, it is expected to provide much-needed relief to vulnerable households in Sokoto State, marking a significant step towards addressing food insecurity in the region.
