FG Targets Development of Livestock Sector to Boost Economy

by AgroNigeria

The Federal Government has restated its commitment to improving the livestock sector with an aim to support Nigeria’s economic growth.

The Minister for Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, disclosed this during an inspection of livestock projects at Modibbo Adama University in Yola, Adamawa State.

The minister highlighted the government’s dedication to transforming the sector into a key contributor to the economy.

Maiha explained that his ministry is implementing foundational strategies to establish a structure for the livestock industry.

He noted that the goal is to ensure the sector drives job creation, attracts investments, and strengthens food security.

According to him, these efforts are essential to position the livestock sector as an integral part of Nigeria’s economic recovery and growth plan.

While touring the university’s veterinary clinic, artificial insemination laboratory, and pasture development site, the minister commended the institution for its dedication to improving livestock production.

He emphasized that Modibbo Adama University had demonstrated exceptional commitment to innovation in the livestock industry.

“This university has shown what is possible when there is a focus on practical solutions and a commitment to excellence.

“Their contribution to livestock development is commendable and shows a clear example of what the sector can achieve with the right support and vision.”

The minister’s visit is part of ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s livestock sector, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development in July 2024.

The ministry was established to address challenges in the industry, attract investments, and create a more harmonious environment for stakeholders.

The Vice Chancellor of Modibbo Adama University, Professor Ibrahim Umar, described the minister’s visit as a positive step for the sector. Umar said the university’s 4,000 hectares of arable land and its establishment of a directorate for commercial farming are part of its contributions to agriculture and livestock production.

He added, “The minister’s leadership and experience offer great hope for the growth of Nigeria’s livestock economy. We are ready to work with the government to ensure the sector reaches its full potential.”
