The Senator representing Osun East Senatorial District, Adenigba Fadahunsi, has called on federal and state governments to prioritize large-scale rice farming as a strategic step toward strengthening the naira and reducing the nation’s reliance on imports.
Speaking in Ilase-Ijesa during the presentation of 3,000 bags of rice to various groups from 10 local government areas in his senatorial district, Senator Fadahunsi highlighted the critical role of local rice production in bolstering food security and economic stability.
“Rice has become a staple in the country, and its high demand makes it imperative for governments at all levels to ensure its availability at affordable prices,” he said.
He added, “The foreign exchange spent annually on rice imports is enormous. Cultivating this essential crop locally will not only reduce forex pressure but also help stabilize the naira. Federal and state governments must act urgently to address this issue.”
Fadahunsi emphasized that increased local rice production could mitigate further naira depreciation and enhance food security.
The senator also encouraged constituents to remain hopeful for a brighter 2025 and urged prayers for the progress of Osun State and Nigeria.
In a statement by his media adviser, Sam Segun-Progress, it was noted that the event coincided with a courtesy visit by the leadership of market women in the senatorial district.
During the event, Senator Fadahunsi distributed over 3,000 bags of rice to traditional rulers, religious leaders, political figures, and market women for distribution within their communities.
However, his gesture was widely commended by attendees, who praised his commitment to alleviating hunger and championing sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s economic challenges.
