Former Minister Urges FG, States To Explore Economic, Health Potential of Moringa Farming

Former Minister of State for Health, Professor Iyorwuese Hagher, has called on federal, state, and local governments, as well as higher institutions, to explore the economic and health benefits of moringa farming.

Speaking in Abuja during a media session after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Moringa Productions, Marketers, and Farmers Welfare and Empowerment Association of Nigeria, Eden Moringa Productions and Marketers Limited, and the Middle Belt Youth Development Organisation, in partnership with Agreco Shift Limited, Hagher emphasized that moringa farming could create employment, boost revenue, and improve public health.

As the Grand Patron of the Middle Belt Youth Development Organisation, he urged universities and polytechnics to invest in moringa cultivation as a means to generate wealth and enhance their financial sustainability.

“Moringa is a truly remarkable plant. Scientifically proven to treat a wide range of health conditions, it offers a natural alternative to chemical-based medicines,” he said.

“Nigeria’s healthcare system faces serious challenges, and we must turn to natural remedies. If we cultivate moringa widely, we can significantly improve public health.”

He also warned about the adverse effects of chemical fertilizers on soil health and advocated for a transition to organic moringa-based fertilizers.

“We can no longer ignore the damage caused by imported chemical fertilizers, which degrade the soil and make farmers dependent on foreign inputs,” he said, urging the government to prioritize the production of moringa fertilizers to enhance food security.

Dr. Ashimashiga Akoloaga, Chairman/CEO of the Moringa Productions, Marketers, and Farmers Welfare and Empowerment Association of Nigeria, noted that the MoU aimed to encourage youth participation in moringa farming and educate farmers on producing high-quality moringa products that meet international standards.

Officials acknowledged that Nigerian agricultural exports often face rejection due to high chemical residues, stressing the need for organic fertilizers derived from moringa to improve soil health and boost yields.

Chris Aba, President of the Middle Belt Youth Development Organisation, highlighted the vast potential of moringa farming for economic growth and called on investors to support the industry to drive Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
