Abubakar Buba, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Environment, has announced an ambitious plan to plant 10 million trees over the next four years as part of the state’s afforestation program to address climate change and protect the environment.
During a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday, Buba highlighted that the government planted approximately 1.7 million trees in 2024 and aims to double that number this year. He added that tree nurseries have been established to supply the seedlings required for the initiative.
The commissioner commended Governor Uba Sani for his dedication to promoting a greener and more sustainable Kaduna. He also shared that the governor has instructed the Ministry of Environment to dredge River Kaduna and other water bodies in the state.
Buba explained that clearing drainages and improving water flow into rivers will help mitigate flooding in residential areas. He emphasized that trees play a critical role in absorbing carbon dioxide, a major contributor to climate change.
“We encourage residents not only to plant trees but to ensure they nurture them to maturity, both in urban and rural areas,” he stated.
Additionally, the government plans to desilt approximately 140 kilometers of drainages within city centers to prevent flooding during the rainy season and enhance water flow.
