APM Terminals Apapa has engaged with the Oyo State government alongside commodities importers, exporters, to explore solutions for improving farm produce transportation through the Apapa-Moniya rail service.
Led by Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen, the APM Terminals team traveled by rail from Ebute-Metta to Moniya, assessing the terminal’s capacity and meeting with stakeholders, including the Special Adviser to the Oyo State Government and Director at IITA, Tilewa Folami.
However, discussions focused on streamlining the movement of perishable goods and ensuring a more efficient supply chain.
Knudsen highlighted that the Apapa-Moniya rail service is designed to connect Nigeria’s food-producing regions to global markets, offering a dependable and cost-effective transport system. By reducing transit times and minimizing losses, the service aims to enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian farmers and agribusinesses in international trade.
Denmark’s Consul General, Trade Counsellor Jette Bjerrum, and Commercial Trade Advisor to the Danish Consulate, Victoria Epelle, also participated in the engagement, emphasizing Denmark’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural value chain through trade partnerships and cold chain infrastructure.
Folami reaffirmed Oyo State’s dedication to food production and agribusiness, highlighting the need for efficient transportation networks to support farmers and traders.
He stressed that the Apapa-Moniya rail corridor would play a key role in reducing post-harvest losses, easing logistics for bulk exports, and positioning Oyo as a hub for agribusiness.
He urged APM Terminals to provide regular updates on the rail service and consider establishing a local office in Moniya to enhance coordination with stakeholders.
