Kidnappers Kill Billionaire Katsina Farmer After Family Pays ₦500m Ransom

by AgroNigeria

The brutal murder of a Katsina billionaire farmer after ransom payment has shocked Nigeria and exposed the terrifying new reality of banditry in the country’s north-west, that paying up is no longer a guarantee of survival.

Alhaji Bala Sani Kawo was abducted on Thursday, June 11, 2026, along with one of his workers near Dantakari town in Dandume Local Government Area of Katsina State. Kawo was regarded as one of the most prominent figures in Dandume, producing thousands of bags of farm produce annually and creating employment opportunities for over 5,000 people. He was the eldest son of Alhaji Sani Kawo, one of the most respected farmers in the history of the local government.

On Saturday, June 13, 2026, at about 1:30 p.m., the bandits contacted Alhaji Bala’s family, informing them that he was unwell and demanding a ransom for his release. The family raised the required amount and delivered it to the bandits. After receiving the ransom, the bandits instructed the family to proceed to a location they specified, where they found Alhaji Bala’s corpse.

This Katsina billionaire farmer killed after ransom payment was not an isolated act of opportunistic crime. It represents a calculated betrayal by armed groups who are increasingly operating with impunity across Nigeria’s north-west. Premium Times reports that the exact ransom figure could not be independently verified, with some accounts claiming the bandits initially demanded hundreds of millions of naira, while local sources said the family eventually raised five million naira. Periscope International, which first broke the story, put the figure at ₦500 million, suggesting the initial demand may have been drastically negotiated down before delivery.

The killing comes just days after another high-profile tragedy in the same state. Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, died in captivity two weeks after he was abducted alongside his wife in Katsina State. The Katsina State Government confirmed his death, saying the retired military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held by his abductors. Security operatives had not recovered his body as of the time of the report, with efforts ongoing to locate his remains.

The military confirmed that troops subsequently rescued the General’s wife, with the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, saying the Armed Forces remained committed to securing all victims held by criminal groups and restoring peace to affected communities.

Two high-profile deaths within days of each other, a Katsina billionaire farmer killed after ransom, and a retired army general dead in captivity, have fuelled outrage across the country and deepened mistrust in Nigeria’s ability to protect even its most prominent citizens. Community members said Kawo’s death generated widespread grief across Dandume Local Government Area, where he was known for his large-scale farming and his role as an employer in the region.

Residents of Dandume have been thrown into mourning following the killing, with sources close to the family disclosing that the kidnappers had contacted relatives and told them he was ill in captivity before the ransom demand was made.
